«Hoje, dia 2 de julho, realiza-se no Átrio dos Passos Perdidos da Reitoria da Universidade de Lisboa, uma receção para celebrar a independência da Eslovénia, que ocorreu em 25 de junho de 1991. O evento é organizado pelo embaixador da Eslovénia, Matja? Longar, em colaboração com o Leitorado de Língua e Cultura Eslovenas do Centro de Estudos Eslavos da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, no qual funcionam cursos de língua e cultura da Bulgária, República Checa, Eslovénia, Polónia e Rússia.
No século VII, os antepassados dos eslovenos fundaram um Estado independente (Carantânia), cujo regime democrático foi descrito pelo jurista Jean Bodin em Les Six Livres de la République e despertou o interesse de alguns políticos, como Thomas Jefferson, terceiro presidente dos EUA, que se terá inspirado em Bodin. Porém, durante muito tempo, os eslovenos não tiveram um Estado próprio, nem um exército para lutar pela sua independência, tendo desenvolvido a escrita literária e publicado livros em esloveno como uma forma de luta pela independência. Os primeiros manuscritos em esloveno são religiosos e datam do século X. O primeiro livro impresso foi publicado no século XVI e constituiu uma base para a futura criação literária. Mas foi na primeira metade do século XIX que France Pre?eren, considerado o maior poeta esloveno, elevou a literatura eslovena ao nível da literatura erudita da Europa. Um dos principais objetivos da obra de Pre?eren foi provar que os eslovenos são uma nação. Na época do romantismo literário iniciada por ele na literatura eslovena, segundo as teorias dos irmãos Schlegel, uma nação existe apenas se a sua língua é capaz de expressar a poesia erudita, sobretudo o soneto (de herança italiana). Pre?eren é autor de sonetos (uma das suas obras-primas intitula-se Coroa de Sonetos) e introduziu na literatura eslovena outras formas poéticas da literatura europeia e mundial, provando assim que existe a nação eslovena. Nesse século, na Primavera das Nações, os eslovenos, tal como outras nações sob o domínio do Império Austríaco, apresentaram o seu programa nacional, cujas principais ideias políticas já tinham sido expressas por Pre?eren no poema Zdravljica Brinde, que é hoje o hino nacional esloveno. Pre?eren foi apoiado por alguns intelectuais, entre os quais o seu amigo Matija Cop, um linguista, historiador e crítico literário que possuía uma grande biblioteca com obras provenientes de vários países, incluindo Portugal, pelo que se supõe que Camões foi um dos poetas que influenciou a obra de Pre?eren.
Em memória do poeta, foi erigida na praça principal de Liubliana uma estátua sua, olhando para a janela do edifício onde viveu a mulher que amava sem ser correspondido. Em muitas praças principais da Europa, há estátuas de reis ou chefes militares, mas os eslovenos durante séculos não tiveram líderes militares nem reis e conquistaram a independência em grande parte devido a escritores como France Pre?eren, um verdadeiro poeta rei.» Diário de Notícias 02-07-2015 http://www.dn.pt/inicio/opiniao/interior.aspx?content_id=4656897&seccao=Convidados
